Static Publishing on Large Sites

My company uses SilverStripe v3.1.21, along with the Subsite module to display and administer a number of clients' websites that sell products. This results in close to 200 subsites and a page count in the tens of thousands. The websites are very slow to load and tools such as Google's PageSpeed tell us page speeds are poor. We've already done step like combining and minimising the JS and compressing resources such as imaging, which gave some improvements, however the pages remain slow. The system was handed to us in this state and further hardware upgrades are not on the table as an option, nor are gaining additional resources for redevelopment.

We've taken a look at the static publish module (https://github.com/silverstripe/silverstripe-staticpublisher) and found that when we generating static pages the pages become fast and get a good score on the various tools, however the process to regenerate all of these pages takes over 14 hours, which is unacceptable given these products are updated from an external source daily. We also find that the regeneration process is a memory hog, as the module builds all of the pages in memory before dumping to file, causing the process to crash. We've had to alter the process to go subsite-by-subsite just to make it run.

We then took a look at the static publishing queue module (https://github.com/silverstripe/silverstripe-staticpublishqueue), which seemed to address our issues by having it queue pages as needed for regeneration, making it much more responsive to changes. However, the module seems to be very buggy and often crashes when generating pages.

Has anyone had experience using these modules (or similar) with larger sites and may be able to provide any pointers or ideas on how to implement static publishing successfully?

Site Search should include my custom dataobjects fields

I was wondering if the Site Search can be used to search on my custom developed DataObjects fields. For e.g. I have a Profile Module that has the Designation (Plain Text Field), Company Name/Employer (Plain Text Field), Biography (WYSIWYG).

I dont want to use Solr or Elastic Search or any other FulltextSearch Engine for now.

Kindly let me know how we can achieve this with the available functionality with in SS (ver 3.2 - 3.5) ??

Comments Module not working

Hello

I've recently setup SilverStripe 3.6.1, created my own custom pages and then installed the comments module (I took the version that works on SS 3.6.1). It took a bit of reading to figure out how to integrate the comments module. Once completed, I could see the area in the CMS to moderate the comments, and in pages, I could see the tick the box that allows commenting. Cool.

So, for my custom pages, I ticked the box to "allow comments", saved these pages and then went to view them. Alas... no commenting module to be seen on the page.

Am I missing something? Do I need to add a $comments in the custom page type? I've tried searching for documentation and haven't found anything to help. It's been a real let down for a CMS that I'm passionate about. I've come from Drupal (ugh..) and while it's unfriendly in the back-end, the documentation is insanely good.

Any help will be very much appreciated! Thanks.

I am using SS 3.6.0. It has been identified as an issue specifically to silverstripe-userforms as a result of a bug in SS itself. I am using version 4.3.2 of userforms. A patch has been made see ticekt https://github.com/silverstripe/silverstripe-userforms/issues/620, but it links back to a issue with the framework as seen https://github.com/silverstripe/silverstripe-framework/issues/6886. Hopefully it will get patched soon.

Just to make sure, I've tried this on a GridField added to a Page, in SilverStripe 3.6. I filtered using the form that opens when you click the search icon top right. The export button gave me only the filtered rows.

So I guess it works in 3.6. Maybe you are using a version of SilverStripe where this doesn't work as expected?

You could add the field conditionally, for instance only if the current classname is 'Page' or only if the classname isn't 'RedirectorPage' or...

Something like:

When im adding custom field to Page class, new filed also appears in RedirectorPage (eg. image gallery). Any ideas how to remove this filed ? :)

Export button GridField with filtering

Hi,

In the CMS I have a gridfield and have included the GridFieldExportButton button. Then I filter the view-able data using the standard column filtering interface and go to export but it will export all data and not just the filtered results that are shown on screen. Is there a way when exporting to only export the filtered results?

I've tried editing SortableUploadField to extend SelectUploadField and vice-versa but in both cases the files aren't sortable - can't drag and drop the files

Does anyone know of a module that combines selectupload and sortablefile - or how I would use these together?
My client would like drag and drop sort order for their photo galleries but ideally would like to choose which folder they're uploading too each time.
It's a very large photo site so the Files area needs to be very organised (lots of folders and subfolders) - uploading to /Uploads or any single folder won't work

How to setup comment-notifications ?

I've installed the comment-notifications module but I can't find any documentation or instructions on how to activate it / set it up or turn it on.
Like the Comments module do I need to add something to my config.yml file? And any other steps that need to be taken? Will it use the admin email I have set in my app.yml file?

Translatable: While adding content I get redirected from es_ES to en_Us

The Information

I am developing a website using Silverstripe CMS (version 3.5.2) with Translatable module. I have an custom object called Category that $has_many SubCategory. The SubCategory also $has_many FormFile. An exemple of the structure is here below:

- Category: -Subcategory1: - FormFile1
- FormFile2
-Subcategory2: - FormFile1

- Category2: -Subcategory1 - FormFile1

etc...

I am also using the Translatable module for a second language. On that second language I will have different categories, subcategories and files.

_config.php

Object::add_extension('that_page', 'Translatable');
Object::add_extension('Category', 'Translatable');
Object::add_extension('SubCategory', 'Translatable');
Object::add_extension('FormFile', 'Translatable');

The Problem

When I try to add a category for the second language, right after I click create, I get redirected to the default English version in the cms.

If still nobody can find an answer I can provide further code samples.

Translatable: change locale of content

Hey guys!

I have a conceptional question. I currently have a website with de_DE and en_US as the locales. de_DE is default language and many pages are translated into en_US. While en_US is taking the role of the "global" English version. Guess that was a bit stupid.

Now I must implement the "real" US English website, but I already used the locale for "global".

I want to have a clean setup, so my questions are as follows:

1. can I change the existing English content locale to something else?
2. what locale would actually suit the requirement of a "global" English version?

Problem with userforms sending to outlook

We are seeing the insertion of = , after every 75th character in our form submissions. Sending to gmail it is fine, but when it goes to outlook then outlook inserts these characters all over the place. It started happening after a recent php upgrade. Does anyone have a solution to this. We are running php 5.4.

Nevertheless, for anyone landing on this question with the same issue, you will need to install the 'secureassets' module for the UploadField to become available within the CMS Form Builder. This is security precaution for all versions of Userforms from version 3.0.0 Final.

Working site now gives blank home page

Flexslide issues

Hello people - - I have 2 questions regarding flexslider module (lx-berlin/flexslider).
1. how do i set up the ss (i cannot find settings for this in cms) to display flexslider as carousel? I mean - I see these demo files in module, but is there a way to set up carousel in cms or do I need to do change php code on pages, where I want carousel do appear?
2. my flexslider won't "play" gifs. I've read about similar issues, try to put gif as first image,.... - -but nothing works??

If anyone has any idea, would appreciate it a lot.

Well, if you use composer to update, that won't happen. And if you update manually, just leave the assets folder alone - it was really made for this! Mysite is mostly used for code, possibly some special templates and maybe some images, anything non-content. Assets wil hold all files and images for your site content...

SilverStripe file management works together with the assets directory in o so many ways. If you add a link to a file in tinymce 'the silverstripe way', it will in fact be a link to the file ID, meaning that if you were to rename the file, or move it to another folder, the link will still work. The UploadField lets you controll to what folder within the Assets directory you want to upload, how many files, lots of things. There's a secure files module that sets permissions on who can see certain files - and you can manage your files and images and folder structure from within the cms... So my suggestion would really be to work with SilverStripe not 'against it'... :-)

Well my thought was that when major revisions come along and the cms is updated, the assets folder may be part of that. Mysite folder never gets updated as part of a version update.

Yes, it should be possible. I placed this in a Content field, using the html button: <a href="mysite/assets/something.pdf">link</a> and for me that just works. So it must be something else, I guess...

But why you would want to use mysite for that instead of Assets, that is setup to work with the SilverStripe file management I can't really imagine :-)

Well. thank you for your reply. I am aware of the syntax. I have tried it both ways. No luck. For some reason, references to files like PDFs in mysite/assets/PDFS are unrecognized. Yet in assets/Uploads they are displayed properly.

Can we not link to assets in mysite?

I'm not sure what you are doing exactly, but '../mysite...' doesn't seem right to me. Your links should be based on the site root, so probably just 'mysite...'

How to create a link to a file in mysite/assets

I am trying to create a link to a file in mysite/assets/PDFS with an anchor tag.

I am using the news module to create the article and the link is in the article text.
I can create a link but the CMS cannot find the file even though it exists.

E.G. http://1.1.1.1/mysite/assets/PDFS/mypdf.pdf results in a 404 message. The link is <a href="../mysite/assets/PDFS/mypdf.pdf" />link</a>

I have noticed that I can create a link that uploads a file from my computer to the site and that works fine with a reference link to the uploaded file.

I have checked the permissions. Permissions are the same as assets/Uploads which works fine. The .htaccess file is the same as well.
What am I doing wrong?

I have spent hours/days searching and trying content box modules and haven't found the explanation of what they do very clear. I would really appreciate any recommendations. Preferably for the ability to create reusable content eg box with heading, text and image; or 3 columns without editing mysite files.

Getting `Fatal error: Class 'SmtpMailer' not found` for some users

Hi,

I am having the most bizarre bug.

I am getting the following error:
Fatal error: Class 'SmtpMailer' not found in /application/_config.php on line 122

The line involved is
Email::set_mailer(new SmtpMailer());

The strange thing is, the website displays correctly for some users. They don't get the bug.

I added some `print "abc";` code in the _config.php to see if something was cached, but very bizarrely I can see the print result before the bug and also before the site correctly rendered.

I tried ?flush=1 and /dev/build, but nothing seem to fix this issue.

Any idea as to what it could possibly be?

Extending UserDefinedForm Module

Hi all,
I am now currently trying to extend the user form module (https://github.com/silverstripe/silverstripe-userforms). I noticed there is several hooks like

$submittedForm->extend(onPopulationFormField,$field)

Now I have a class

class CustomForm extends UserDefinedForm {
public function onPopulationFormField($field){
...
}
}

But it doesn't enter that function. I am trying to populate a hiddenfield before the form is submitted to the server. Can someone provide me some examples or instruction on how to do this please?

What do i need to do to enable Disqus comments

I have added the shortname and secrete key

I do not understand what the prefix is as well as the disqus identifier

Unable to translate inside templates

I translated the pages from within the backend into multiple languages. No problem. But I cannot translate from within the templates. It always uses the en.yml file, even though es.yml exists and holds the correct data. The regular syntax "<%t ... %>" is used and $ContentLocale shows the right language (eg. es-ES). My SilverStripe version is 3.5.1 and translatable is at 2.2.

Is this a bug or am I missing something? Thanks.
