You got it -- that's how the extra fields were added. I'm starting to think my SS install may simply have corrupted under the load. I did wonder if it ws the database and loaded an alternative copy but same issues... can this sort of thing happen? Buggered if I know?!

Rebuilding from a fresh install of Silverstripe CMS worked the oracle. Something obviously got bent on the development version... thanks for your comments!
