3.4 Update Media Dialogue Broken

Guys,
I have several sites running 3.3 and the CMS Update Media dialog from TinyMCE is populated correctly (although even in this there is no means to CHANGE the image which there was in 2.4)

In 3.4 the dialog is empty (on each and every one of three dev installs). Furthermore 3.4 is very slow indeed. Any ideas?

I have several project with ss3.4 and cannot replicate this. Everything works as expected (php 5.5.17).
Is it an out of the box installation?
