I haven't the faintest idea what you're doing entering data by SQL Query... So I don't know what's going wrong there. Normally, after creating the records in the ModelAdmin interface itself, or importing them as CVS, you'd get an editform with a save button. Try FireFox...
I would honestly suggest doing things the SilverStripe way first, then if you know SilverStripe a bit better, create your own methods. But hey, that's me. Good luck
