Is there an easy way to disable these? Even if i delete the images from the sapphire/images folder, they still appear on the site next to links. I have a download page where I don't want this to happen because it throws the table off.

The ones on the front end of the site come from your theme. Check the typography.css file for references to pdf, zip files etc.
