DropdownField vs. GridFieldAddExistingAutocompleter

I am missing a function in the GridFieldAddExistingAutocompleter to show all existing records.
(i already added a ticket for this some weeks ago: http://open.silverstripe.org/ticket/7963)

But now i am wondering why the GridFieldAddExistingAutocompleter looks (and works) different than a normal DropdownField. (see screenshot)

For me these fields are doing the same things so i am wondering if the GridFieldAddExistingAutocompleter could be "replaced" with a DropdownField ?
This would also solve the problem to show all records.
