I know it's a bit early to ask - but is there any general plan / very rough plan for how long one can expect the SS3 branch to be maintained? Would like to take clarify some guesstimates given to clients..

2.4 EOL has only just been announced. This is 4 years after it was originally released as beta.
3.0 was released 2 years ago so likely that will be EOL 2016. 3.1 is still under active development and released a year ago so you can see the rough pattern. Note that most 3.* dev is already on 3.1 and 3.0 usage is very small from my experience.
